Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
the process of transferring energy from glucose ( a sugar)
it goes on in every cell in all living organisms all the time
What happens during respiration?
the energy transferred by respiration cant be used directly by cells so it makes a substance called ATP
ATP stores the neergy needed for many cell processes
respiration is exothermic reaction - it releases energy
What is a substrate?
a molecule that is broken down in respiration
What are the two types of respiration?
aerobic and anaerobic
What is aerobic respiration?
needs plenty of oxygen
aerobic means with oxygen so aerobic respiration is respiration with oxygen
aerobic respiration produces lots of ATP - 32 molecules per molecule of glucose
equation = glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
What is anaerobic respiration?
without oxygen
so anaerobic respiration happens without oxygen
this transfers much less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic - just 2 molecules of atp are produced
