Resistance Flashcards
What is resistance ?
The opposition or restriction to the current flow in a circuit
What happens to the resistance if the pipe narrows?
Greater the resistance , current will always take the path of least resistance
What will a thicker conductor do?
More free electrons than a narrower one so it will offer less resistance
What are the 4 things that’ll effect resistance ?
- Length -longer the conductor the greater the resistance
- Cross sectional area- larger the CSA, the more current that can flow
- Material
- temperature- hotter the material, the resistance will increase
What is positive temperature coefficient?
As a material becomes hotter, the resistance will Increase
Keeping the temperature constant will cause the other factors to do what?
Change in proportion to each other
What is resistance measured in?
Ohms
If a material is experiences a drop in resistance as the temperature increases, this is called what?
Negative temperature coefficient
If you keep the applied voltage constant then what can be altered?
Current can be increased or decreased
What is a resistor ?
A component designed to deliberately reduce the amount of current flowing in a circuit
What can too much current cause?
Excessive heat dissipation which can cause damage and a fire hazard
