Research Methods Flashcards
IV
Independant variable
the things that you change
DV
dependant variable
the thing measured
Extraneous Variables
those that may affect the DV in some way in the same way for both IV variables
Cofounding Variables
those that effect the different IV conditions differently
reduces VALIDITY of results
Participant Variables
when different people are used for the different IV conditions
eg: age, intelligence, experience would all affect the DV
Standardisation
the same procedure for all participants of the experiment
Demand Characteristics
anything about the experiments environment that tells participants what the experiments about.
eg: makes them behave in a way they assume they are wanted to please the researcher to or alternatively to sabotage the experiment
how to control demand characteristics
- give a false aim (deception - ethical issue)
- do not tell participants the aim (single blind)
- do not tell the investigator and the participant the aim (double blind)
Investigator Effects
when the investigator behaves in a way which may influence participants performance
experimenter expectancy
when the experimenter acts in a way to support their expectation
