Required practicals and maths skills Flashcards
What equation is used to calculate the mean rate of reaction?
Mass produced / time taken = mean rate of reaction
How would you calculate the rate of reaction at a specific point?
draw a tangent then calculate the ‘change in Y / change in x’
What is chromatography used for?
To separate out components of a mixture so they can be identified
What affects the distance travelled by a component in chromatography?
Its solubility
What is the mobile phase in chromatography?
The time in which molecules can move
How do you calculate an Rf value?
Rf value = distance travelled by solute / distance travelled by solvent
What data is provided by a qualitative test?
Descriptive data and what elements are present
What data is provided by a quantitative test?
Numerical data and how much of an element is present
What data is provided by a semi-quantitative test?
A rough estimate of how much of an element is present
How is uncertainty calculated?
+ or - ‘resolution / 2’
How can uncertainty be reduced?
Use a measuring tool with higher resolution
What calculation is used to calculate the scale factor when producing a dilution series (concentration)?
stock concentration / desired concentration = scale factor
What calculation is used to calculate the volume of stock solution when creating a dilution series?
total volume / scale factor = volume of stock solution needed
