Reproductive System of the Dog Flashcards
Identify the external male genital organs.
Testis, Epididymis, Ductus deferens, Extra-pelvic urethra, Penis
Identify the internal male genital organs.
Prostate, Ampulla of the ductus deferens
Describe the external covering of the testis.
Tunica albuginea, Parietal and visceral vaginal tunics
Where do the testes develop and where do they descend to?
Develop within the abdominal cavity, just caudal to the kidneys (retroperitoneal), and descend to the scrotum.
What forms the two layers enveloping the testes?
The vaginal process forms the visceral and parietal vaginal tunic.
Describe the scrotum.
A pouch of skin carried high between the thighs in the caudal inguinal region, houses and covers the testes, and controls testicular temperature.
Enumerate the layers of the scrotum.
Skin, Muscle (tunica dartos), Fascia, Peritoneum
What is the function of the tunica dartos?
Contracts the scrotal skin.
What is the function of the median septum?
Divides the internal cavity of the scrotum in half.
What is the scrotal raphe?
A line extending the full length of the scrotum along the midline.
Describe the epididymis.
Convoluted tubular structure that stores maturing and mature sperm.
Where is the epididymis positioned?
Slightly applied to the dorsolateral surface of the testis.
Enumerate the regions of the epididymis.
Head, Body, Tail
Enumerate the ligaments associated with the epididymis.
Ligament of the tail of the epididymis, Proper ligament of the testis
Describe the ductus deferens.
Tubular organ that conducts sperm from the tail of the epididymis to the prostatic region of the urethra.
