Renal Flashcards
Primary function of the kidneys
Maintain a stable internal environment for optimal cell and tissue metabolism
1) balancing solute and water transport
2) excrete metabolic waste products
3) conserving nutrients
4) Regulating acids and bases
What is the kidneys endocrine function
Secreting the hormone rennin - regulates blood pressure
Erythropoietin- needed for RBC production
125 hydroxy vitamin D3 - metabolizes calcium
What is gluconeogenesis
Synthesizing glucose from amino acid
I’m times of severe fasting
Juxtaglomerular cells secrete what?
Renin
Macula Densa sense changes in what?
Sodium
What happens to cause the urge to void
When the bladder has enough urine (250-300 ccs in an adult)
A micturition reflex occurs which allows urination
This reflex is triggered by an activation of the spinal reflex arc (occurs when the bladder contracts and the internal urethral sphincter relaxes. - this causes the urge to void
Potty training
The reflex to void can be inhibited or facilitated by impulse from the brain resulting in voluntary control of micturition
GFR
Tells us how well the kidneys work
GFR is directly related to _______
Renal blood flow
Changes in systemic blood pressure or blood volume will induce
Changes in arteriole resistance or pressure to maintain a constant GFR
If there is a rise in systemic Bp, the afferent arterioles
Constrict preventing an increase in glomerular blood flow and filtration pressure keeping the GFR the same
