Q

one strength of self disclosure (as an explanation for attraction in relationships)

A

strength: research support. Researchers studied heterosexual couples -> correlations between level of SD and satisfaction. Later research showed relationships are more satisfying when partners take turns to SD (reciprocated).

Q

a limitation of self disclosure

A

Limitation: research is correlational -> not tell us if valid. Other explanations -> the more satisfied a relationship is the more they will then SD. OR SD and satisfaction are independent? -> or is it caused by time together?

Q

outline the absorption addiction model of parasocial relationships (PR)

A

PR focus on a celebrity to make up for inadequacies in a person’s life/relationships and give a sense of identity.

Absorption: seeking fulfilment in celebrity worship -> motivates to focus attention as much as possible on the celebrity, to become preoccupied/identify with them.

Addiction: increase ‘dose’ for satisfaction -> extreme behaviours/delusional thinking. (stalking as believe celebrity in love but manager is in way)PR

Q

evaluate the absorption addiction model of parasocial relationships

A

strength: link between celebrity worship and body image. Maltby assessed boys and girls (14-16yrs). Girls -> intense parasocial relationship with an adult female celeb. admired body. as have poor body image. (ED?)
- supports association of poor psychological functioning and level of parasocial relationship.
