What is culture?
set of beliefs, meanings, values and rules for living shared by groups and societies to create identity.
What is Tradition
The system of beliefs and values that come from shared experiences of a society. Inherited through ancestors and their practices.
what is institution
The system of meanings, beliefs and values like food, housing and health and the economy which takes a lasting pace in our social structure.
what is identity
The set of behaviour or personal characteristics which an individual is recognizable as a member of a group.
What is the difference between a sign and a symbol
Sign- One objective meaning through gestures/emotions.
Symbols- Several deep meanings behind something with hidden and main representation.
Name the first trait of culture
Humans create culture- distinguishes us from nature like animals and only humans have culture.
Name the second trait of culture
Culture consists of ways of doing things- culture is about how we do things ike eating, communicating, praying. How things should be done.

Culture is public- culture is about how we as a group or community so things in a certain way.

Culture arises from tradition- traditions are inherited and passed on and for catholics we see tradition as living the gospel

Culture is made up of rule-governed actions- so many of the things come from tradition we have a certain duty to keep them functioning and to keep them as they are. Like rules.

Culture becomes established in institutions- the way we do things link together as a system and we call them system institutions.

Culture gives us our identity- the way we do things is the source of our culture which sets us apart from other cultures.

A ritual passes on a tradition- give meaning to events passed on which give rituals an important meaning.

Ritual needs our bodies- rituals are carried in our bodies and involve them. they are washed, anointed, touched, etc.
third trait of rituals
Ritual is accompanied by words- the words give meaning to certain events, often associated with music.
