A

In and around London the economic wealth is much higher than up north and the north east. For example the average wage in Kensington and Chelsea is almost double the average of the Scottish highlands.

what is the index of multiple deprivation ?

A

A measure used by the government which measures deprivation in a range of 37 different categories. Using this they can decide how much funding a certain area will need. It splits England in to 33,000 different areas with about 1,500 people in each area so it is very fine grained.

A

London schools where previously given a lot of funding however now they are receiving cuts as there are other areas of the country that need the money more.

Investments form companies such as Nissan after WW2 have boosted the economy and changed it from a city in the primary sector to a modern city. Today it is now the 11th most attractive city for inward investment.

The population massively increased from the early 1900’s to the 1940’s due to many primary jobs. However from the 50’s to the 80’s the population decreased. However since then the population has slowly Been increasing which shows that people want to move back in to the area and this shows positive development and change.

  • young people may feel they want to leave a place with a poor image
  • people are attracted to a place with a positive image
  • there are likely to be more jobs in a place with an attractive image because companies will be attracted to them

A

it is one of the USA’s poorest towns. Half of its population live bellow the poverty line, only 1/3 graduate from school and drug crime is a major problem.

  • it was once the world’s biggest heavy industrial region however global shift left them without jobs
  • lower wage costs in the south eastern USA have meant steel and car industry has moved there
  • there has been economic re-structuring as high paid primary and secondary workers now do low paid tertiary work
