what is regeneration ?
The process of improving a rural or urban place by making positive changes. This could be through redevelopment, renewell or re-imaging
how do economic sectors vary in the UK ?
- rural areas have more primary industries
- most secondary employment is in northern cities such as Manchester, Sheffield and Glasgow
- tertiary industries are in the cities
- most Quaternary are found in London and the south east
how does economic wealth vary throughout the UK ?
In and around London the economic wealth is much higher than up north and the north east. For example the average wage in Kensington and Chelsea is almost double the average of the Scottish highlands.
what is the index of multiple deprivation ?
A measure used by the government which measures deprivation in a range of 37 different categories. Using this they can decide how much funding a certain area will need. It splits England in to 33,000 different areas with about 1,500 people in each area so it is very fine grained.
what is an example of the govt. using the index of multiple deprivation ?
London schools where previously given a lot of funding however now they are receiving cuts as there are other areas of the country that need the money more.
how have physical factors influenced change in Newcastle ?
- there has been salt, glass and coal industries here in the past
- the river tyne flowing through it which has led to ports being set up
how have accessibility and connectedness influenced change in Newcastle ?
- there have been major developments on the rail network
- they have made an airport which they plan to expand
how has historical development influenced change in Newcastle ?
- the city centre was rebuilt from the 1830’s
- there was huge modernisation after WW2
how has local and national planning influenced change in Newcastle ?
- after WW2 there was welfare state intervention which included nationalisation, expanded social services and social housing
- Thatcher shut down the steel works which started a shift from primary sector work to more modern industries- consumer goods industry
How has FDI effected Newcastle ?
Investments form companies such as Nissan after WW2 have boosted the economy and changed it from a city in the primary sector to a modern city. Today it is now the 11th most attractive city for inward investment.
what is the economic state of Newcastle now ?
It is strong economically and its economy is predicted to grow by 14.5% in the next decade which is the second largest rate in the north after Manchester
what do the employment statistics look like for Newcastle today ?
- 15.6% are claiming benefits which shows a lot are without work or in low paid employment
- their average wage is lower than the rest of England
what do the population figures on Newcastle show ?
The population massively increased from the early 1900’s to the 1940’s due to many primary jobs. However from the 50’s to the 80’s the population decreased. However since then the population has slowly Been increasing which shows that people want to move back in to the area and this shows positive development and change.
how might people be effected by images and perceptions of a certain area ?
- young people may feel they want to leave a place with a poor image
- people are attracted to a place with a positive image
- there are likely to be more jobs in a place with an attractive image because companies will be attracted to them
what makes Sydney such a successful place ?
- it is part of an economically successful region
- high income jobs in the ‘knowledge’ economy
- its a sun belt city and attracts many visitors and also people want to live there
