Aims of Lincoln’s Presidency
Less harsh on the South- many Radical Republicans disregarded him for this
Radical Republicans wished for slaves to have same rights as white Americans- vote
Lincoln wished to decide the policy of Reconstruction- conflict with Congress
Ten Percent Plan
April 1864
Rebel states admitted if 10% of their electorate agreed to an oath of allegiance to USA + supported all existing acts of Congress regarding Slavery + African Americans
Wade- Davis Plan
June 1865
Radical Republicans unhappy with ten percent plan
Required 50% of electorate - tougher approach to future allegiance to oath of the union- wished to abolish slavery under state Law- vetoed by Lincoln
The 13th Amendment
November 1864
Formally freed all slaves from all states in USA
The Freedman’s Bureau
March 1865
Set up for 1 year, helped former slaves
Provided education + employment for former slaves + established schools for African Americans
Lincoln accepted the rights of African Americans
