Reasons and events surrounding Manitoba, British Columbia, NWT, Alberta, Saskatchewan and PEI’s entrance into confederation Flashcards
Manitoba
Manitoba joined confederation because they wanted to protect the Metis peoples and their rights. The Manitoba Act of 1870 allowed them to join Canadas as a fifth province.
B.C
B.C joined confederation because they were struggling financially in debt and economically. They had feared since American purchased Alaska they would be invaded.
NWT
NWT joined confederation because it was given to Canada in 1870 after Britain transferred their control over the land. At first the region didn’t have its own government. Instead it was controlled by the federal government in Ottawa.
PEI
PEI was the only colony that did not enter confederation at the maritime conference. Yet later on joined because they were struggling financially and realized that all the other provinces were improving.
Alberta and Saskatchewan
In 1850s and 1860s, the British government wanted to control Alberta and Saskatchewan for agricultural purposes. Once Canada became a country the government feared that Americans would try to take over the land. So Canada purchased Rupert’s land and the Northwest- Territory from the Hudson’s Bay company.
