1st October
Louis summoned the loyal Flanders regiment to Versailles
- had a banquet with anti-revolutionary sentiment
- anger in Paris when news reached of this
- this coincided with a food shortage
5th October
crowd of women stormed the Hotel de Ville - headquarters of Commune
- demanded bread
- were persuaded to march to Versailles - 20km away - to put their complaints to the king
6,000-7,000 women marched for 5 hours - 20,000 National Guard followed them
- women invaded Assembly and sent deputation to King when they arrived
- he agreed to provide Paris with grain
- agreed to approve Declaration & Decrees
6th October
royal family left Versailles
- National Assembly also moved to Paris
significance of October Days
King regarded himself as a prisoner of the Parisian mob when he was brought back to Paris
- they hoped to reduce his political influence
Assembly had been ignored and humiliated by mob’s actions
- felt as imprisoned as the King
- feared the mob
Assembly issued decree that changed Louis’ status
- now subordinate to the law
- his subjects became citizens
- a shift in power towards the people
- many deputies distrusted people as much as the King
