Rational Number
Any whole number, integer, fraction or decimal that repeats (pattern) or terminates (ends)
Examples: 3, 0.25, 1/4, -4
Equivalent
Equal to. Having the same amount of value.
Example: 3/1 = 3
Negative Number
A number less than zero.
We use - to show a negative number.
example: -3
Positive Number
A number greater than zero.
We use + or just the number to show a positive number.
example: 4 or +4
Opposite/Additive Inverse
Two numbers that are the same distance from you
example: 5 and -5 are opposites/additive inverses
Integer
A POSITIVE or NEGATIVE NUMBER but NOT a fraction or a decimal.
examples: 3, -4, 9, -20
non examples: -0.6 or 1/4
Whole Number
A POSITIVE NUMBER where there is no fraction or decimal part
Zero Pair
A number and its opposite, which add to zero
Example: 2 and -2
Factor
A number that is multiplied by another number to get a product
Product
The answer to a multiplication problem
Quotient
The answer to a division problem
Reciprocal/Additive Inverse
The number you must multiply by to get a product of 1.
EX: 2 and 1/2 are reciprocals/multiplicative inverses
EX: 4/5 and 5/4 are reciprocals/multiplicative inverses
Sum
The answer to addition
Difference
The answer to subtraction
Order of Operations
The order in which you evaluate an expression Parenthesis Exponents Multiply/Divide (left to right) Add/Subtract (left to right)
