Q

Can you find the average speed by averaging the two rates?

A

Nope! Because the object spends more time travelling at the slower rate, the average rate will ALWAYS be close to the slower rate.

Q

How do you find the relative rate for two people moving towards each other?

A

Add them together

Ex. 5 mph + 6 mph =11mph

They are moving towards each other at 11mph

Q

How do you find the relative rate of two objects moving away from each other?

A

Those two increase the distance at a rate of 30+45 =75 mph. You add them

Q

If two machines are working together, how do you calculate the rate?

A

Add the rates together.

Ex.
If Lucas can complete 1/3 of the task in an hour and Serena can do 1/2 in an hour then they do 5/6 of the task every hour.

Q

Machine a fills soda bottles at a constant rate of 60 bottles every 12 minutes. Machine b fills soda bottles at a constant rate of 120 bottles every eight minutes. How many bottles can both machines working together fill in 25 minutes?

A
  1. Find the rate/min of each machine
    Machine A: 60/12= 5bottles/min
    Machine B: 120/8= 15 b/m
  2. Add rates together
    5+15=20 b/m
  3. Complete rt=w formula
    20x25=500
