Quiz 1 Flashcards
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Substance
A form of matter that has a definite composition and distinct properties
What can be separated by physical methods?
Mixtures into their pure substance components
What can be separated by chemical methods?
Compounds into elements
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct identities
Element
A substance that cannot be separated into smaller substances by chemical means (so not at all)
Compound
Substance composed of atoms of two or more elements chemically united in fixed proportions. Only separated by chemical means
Physical vs chemical change
Physical - Does not alter the composition or identity of a substance
Chemical - Alters the composition or identity of the substance(s) involved
Extensive vs intensive properties
Extensive - Depends upon how much matter is being considered (length, mass, volume)
Intensive - Does not depend upon how much matter is being considered (density, temperature, color).
