Qualitative tests for ions Flashcards
1
Q
Which gas forms when ammonium chloride is warmed with sodium hydroxide (aq) ?
A
Ammonia gas
2
Q
How to test for sulfate ions?
A
you first add hydrochloric acid and then add barium chloride solution
3
Q
What would a positive test for carbonate ions look like
A
the lime water would turn foggy and cloudy
4
Q
Whats the sulfate test?
A
aqueous barium ions are added to an unknown solution.
equation being Ba2+ (aq) + SO4^2-(aq) –> BaSO4(s)
5
Q
Whats the carbonate test?
A
1) in a test tube add dilute nitric acid to the solution being tested.
2) bubbling may indicate a carbonate being present.
3) bubble the gas through lime water and if it turns cloudy a white precipitate will have formed (of calcium carbonate)
