What should you do before giving bad news to a patient?
TURN OFF PAGER Involve others as appropriate Be specific Jargon-free language Inform the patient as soon as possible
Comprehensive histories
New patients
“Yearly” physicals
Preoperative
Hospitalized
Problem-oriented or focused histories
“Typical” office visit
“Sick” visit
Requires immediate attention, so only the need is given full attention
Expanded physical
If the CC involves a system or if the patient has had a morbidity in the system in the past, then do a more thorough exam of that system
Basic physical
Test major function of system
Use when no deficit is found
Oral presentations
Used to inform physician about the status of a patient
Brief, but includes all important information
Does not need to include everything that will go into a SOAP note
