Thomas Cartwright, Cambridge professor lost his academic freedom of speech and professorship for leading the academic attack on the settlement
Who is Walter Strickland?
MP Walter Strickland in 1571 wanted change to the Prayer Book, summoned before the Privy Council for infringing the Royal Prerogative, barred from the house but returned, bill never appeared again
Who is Anthony Cope?
Proposed ‘bill and book’ wanting to overturn the Church Government, subsequently ending bishop authority. Sent to the Tower with 4 others. Government launched an attack in Commons against the bill, they changed tactics after this
What is the 39 Articles?
Puritans won concessions over the 39 articles, defining Church beliefs, Clergy had to accept only those about doctrine.
Who were the Separatists ?
Puritans who wanted their own church - most famous Brownists in Norwich - group under Henry Barrow and John Greenwood established in London, they were arrested and executed after sectaries legislation.
Heavily divided and small movement.
What happened in 1572?
John Field and Thomas Wilcox published ‘Admonition to Parliament’, called for church hierarchy to be replaced, both arrested and sent to jail but their actions caused further debate
