soft and low pitch
heard through inspiration and into expiration about 1/3 of way through
heard near axilla and base of lungs

What are bronchovesicular sounds
soft and moderate pitch
heard through inspiration and expiration with potential silent interval between
heard near sternum and by base of lungs
I:E 1:1
What are bronchial sounds
loud and higher pitch
short inspiratory sound with longer expiration
heard along bronchial area
I:E 1:3
What are tracheal sounds
very loud and harsh with high pitch
inspiration and expiration are same length
heard over manubrium and neck
I:E 1:1
What do rales sound like
brief
coarse or fine
intermittent, non-musical
usually at end of inspiration
What do rhonchi sound like
low pitched
inspiratory and expiratory
can be moved via coughing
What do wheezing sound like
high pitched with musical quality
usually expiratory but can be both
What can cause rales
Pneumonia
Fibrosis
CHF
What can cause rhonchi
bronchial infections or inflammation
What can cause wheezing
partial airway obstruction via secretions, tissue inflammation, foreign body
What do friction rubs sound like
like hands being rubbed together
crepitant or squeaky sounds through inspiration and expiration
What can cause friction rubs
pneumonia
pleuritis
tumor
