Protist (Protozoa) Flashcards
What are the Characteristics of Protists
- Eukaryotic
- Unicellular/Multicellular
- Heterotroph/Autotroph
- With/Without Cell Wall
- Free Living/Parasites
- Mostly Lives in Water
What are the 3 groups that Protists are divided into
- Animal-Like Protist: Protozoa
- Plant-Like Protist: Algae
- Fungi-Like Protist: Slime-mold
What are the characteristics of a Protozoa
- Unicellular
- No Cell Wall
- Heterotroph
- Free Living/Parasites
- Mostly has moving tools
What are Protozoa’s Divided based on
They are divided into 4 based on its moving tools
What are the 4 types of Protozoa’s
Rhizopoda, Ciliates, Flagellates, Sporozoa
What is the moving tool of a Rhizopoda and what are its characteristics?
- Pseudopodia: moving by water movement in their cell
- Amoeboid (No definite body shape)
- Phagocytosis (Engulfing the food molecules)
- Reproduce by Binary Fission
- Has cell membrane, without cell wall
Examples of Rhizopoda are
- Amoeba
- Foraminifera: Oil Indicator, Cytoskeleton made from CaCO3 (Cytoskeleton helps them withstand the pressure in water)
- Radiolaria: Oil indicator, Cytoskeleton made from Silica
What is the moving tool of a Ciliates and what are its characteristics?
- Cilia: Moving by hair
- Asexual Reproduction: Binary Fission
- Sexual Reproduction: Conjugation
- Mostly are free living, some are parasites
Example of Ciliates are
- Paramecium
What is the moving tool of a Flagellates and what are its characteristics?
- Flagella: Moves by flagella (Tail)
- Asexual Reproduction: Binary Fission
- Most Heterotrophs, Few are Autotrophs (Photosynthesis)
- Most Parasites, Few Free Living
What is the moving tool of Sporozoans and what are its characteristics?
- No moving Tools
- They move by following the blood stream
- Parasites because the depend on other living things
Example of Sporozoans are
- Plasmodium (The cause of Malaria, Live inside Anopheles Mosquitos)
What is the first stage in the Life Cycle of Plasmodium and what happens in the stage?
The first stage in the life cycle is when the Plasmodium is a Sporozoit.
The mosquito with the Sporozoit bites a human and then it goes to the liver cells, destroy liver, and release as merozoit from liver.
What is the second stage in the Life Cycle of Plasmodium and what happens in the stage?
The second stage is when the Plasmodium is a Merozoit.
The Merozoit goes to the Red Blood Cells of a human and destroys the Red Blood Cells, making itself bigger from feeding off of the nutrients
What is the third stage in the Life Cycle of Plasmodium and what happens in the stage?
The third stage is when the Plasmodium is a Tropozoit
The Tropozoit continues goin to other red blood cells and destroys it as it becomes bigger from feeding off of the nutrients
