Protiens Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 different r groups
A
Neutral and non polar (hydrophobic)
Neutral and polar (hydrophilic)
Acidic (negatively charged)
Basic (positively charged)
2
Q
Why is the r group important
A
Protons have to fold up into a particular shape to be functional and it is the interactions between the R groups of amino acids that determine and maintain this shape. Any changes in the R groups might destroy the function of the protein.
3
Q
Nine essential amino acids
A
These are the amino acids that animals cannot make
4
Q
what’s a pH scale
A
Is the negative log of the concentration of h+ ions in an aqueous solution
