Proteins Flashcards
General Formula for amino acids
NH2 (amino group)
COOH (carboxyl group)
R (variable group)
H + C
what are proteins
Polymers of amino acids (polypeptides)
how many different types of amino acids are there
20
what does the r group represent in an amino acid?
it represents a variable group as it can be replaced by any of the 20 amino acids
what is in the Primary level of protein structure:
The order and sequence of the amino acid chain (polypeptide) and peptide bonds
what is in the Secondary level of protein structure:
Alpha Helices, Beta pleated sheets. Hydrogen Bonds
what is in the Tertiary level of protein structure:
Further Folding of the polypeptide chain, with disulphide bridges, Ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds because of hydrophobic interactions
what is in the Quaternary level of protein structure:
More than one polypeptide chains linked together to form one unit
What is the 3d structure of the molecule affected by, and what else can this affect?
the bonding within the protein, and it can also affect the function of the cell
