Legal description of a parcel of land that begins at a well marked point and follows the boundaries, using directions (bounds) and distances (metes) around the tract, back to the POB

Each calls begins with North or South, then number of degrees East or West

Townships
6 miles square and contain 36 square miles (23,040 acres) each square is called a section, each square is 640 acres

- Designation of the township tier in which township is located
- Designation of the range strip
- Name or number of the principal meridian used for that area
Reference to a recorded plat
System that uses lot and block numbers
