Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
Prokaryote
lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Plasmid
Small circular loops of DNA
Give the bacteria resistance to harmful chemicals
Compare eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
Eukaryotic cells:
• have a nucleus
• DNA is associated with histomes (proteins)
• ribosomes are larger (80s)
Prokaryotic cells:
• have no nucleus
•DNA isn’t associated with proteins
• ribosomes are smaller (70S)
Cell membrane
Made out phospholipids and proteins
Controls the entry and exit of substances
Mesosome
Contains membrane bound proteins needed for respiration and photosynthesis
Cell wall
Made out murein (glycoprotein)
2 kinds of cell wall
Gram positive and gram negative
Gram positive
Stains purple
Gram negative
Stains pink
