Producing New Cells Flashcards
Diploid compliment
Animal cells contain two matching sets of chromosomes
Mitosis
Provides growth and repair for all cells
Describe the stages of mitosis
1, Replicated DNA is wound up into chromosomes. And the nuclear membrane dissolves and centrioles migrate to opposite poles
2, The chromosomes line up down the equator and from the centrioles spindle fibres attach to the centromeres
3, The spindle fibres contract and the and the sister chromosomes are split and taken to opposite poles where new nuclear membrane forms.
4, The plasma membrane pinches in until two cells are formed.
What are stem cells
Unspecialised cells which can divide to make more unspecialised cells
2 places where there are stem cells
Embryo
Bone marrow
The number of chromosomes in a cell just before it divides
46 pairs
Number of chromosomes in a non-mitosis cell
23 pairs
