Producing And Distrabuting Electricity Flashcards
What is the aim of all power stations?
To convert one type of power into electricity.
What stages does a power station use?
1) Use fuel to produce heat which makes steam.
2) Steam moves the blades of the turbine.
3) The rotation movement is made into electricity using a generator.
Most power stations are very inefficient. What is the wasted energy lost as?
Heat and noise.
Advantages and disadvantages of using fossil fuels as energy?
It is a concentrated source of energy.
Burning them causes acid rain and produces carbon dioxide.
We buy most of our fossil fuels from other countries so no control on price or supply.
Advantages and disadvantages of biomass?
It is a renewable source of energy.
It produces carbon dioxide. A lot of biomass is needed to replace coal.
What is the national grid?
It is a network of pylons and cables which cover the whole country. It takes electricity from the power stations to homes and industries. It allows power to be made anywhere on the grid and supplied anywhere else.
