Processes that sustain life: Microscopes Flashcards
Test review
What is the depth of field
The visual range that is in focus from foreground to background. If a specimen is too thick, only a portion of it will be in focus at one time. Low power shows the greatest depth, in high power you will only see one layer at a time as you focus up and down.
What is resolution
The ability of the microscope to show details. High resolution has sharp, easily distinguished details. Low resolution is blurry. The ability to distinguish between things that are close together
What is the field of view
The circular area you can see when you look through the microscope. Higher magnification = smaller field of view
What is total magnification
Eyepiece magniciation multiplied by eyepiece magnification
What is magnification
The number of times larger the image you observe is compared to the actual object. 400x means 400 times larger
How to handle a microscope safely?
-hold with two hands, one on the arm one on the base
-avoid tripping on the electrical cord
-do not touch lens surface with your fingers
-only clean lens surface with lens tissue
-do not adjust focus knobs until ready to use microscope
-always focus using coarse adjustment knob first, with low power objective lens in position
-do not use coarse adjustment knob with medium or high power objective lens
-always store microscope in low power
-never tug on electric cord
-do not use wet hands around electricity
What was the paradigm shift from the recent happenings in science at the time
As much happened paving the way for modern cell theory, people began to think of the world as more of a palce inhabited by microorganisms and got a better understanding of basic life processes at a celluar level
