what are pressure sores
damage to the skin, usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure
what causes pressure sores
constant pressure limits blood flow to the area and therefore causes tissue damage
they are the result of pressure, friction and shear
what are the risk factors for pressure sores
alzheimers, immobility and diabetes mellitus, impaired sensation
presenting symptoms and physical examination
Occurs over bony prominences - most commonly the SACRUM and HEEL
Pressure scores can be staged from Stage 1-4
They are very TENDER
They may become infected leading to fevers, erythema and foul smell
what investigations need to be done
clinical diagnosis
treatment of pressure sores
pressure reducing aids, hygiene and cleansing, analgesia, dietary support and antimicrobial therapy
