John Quincy Adams (m4 1825-1829 m4). Democratic-republican. -> Not to be mistaken with John Adams. The only ex president to make it into the House of Representatives, where he would fought slavery.

Zachary taylor (m4 1849-1850 july9). Whig. Last president to own a slave while serving as president.

James Monroe (m4 1817-1824 m4). Democratic-republican. He was the last of the founding fathers who took presidency.

Franklin Pierce (m4 1853-1857 m4). Democratic. Was from a slave-free state, owned no slaves, but supporters southerners rights to own slaves.

William Henry Harrison (m4 1841-1841 a4). Whig.

Abraham Lincoln (m4 1861-1865 apr15). Republican. Lincoln was consistently anti-slavery, but not necessarily pro-abolitionist (as many presidents). He felt justified in freeing the slaves of the Confederacy, but did nothing to free slaves of the north.

John Adams (march 4 1971-march 4 1801). Federalist. -> Not to be mistaken with John Quincy Adams. Despised slavery (he had a practical distaste, thought it was as dangerous as leaving gun powder in the kitchen).

George Washington (april 30 1732- March 4 1799). Independent party. 2 terms. Two (4 yrs each). His retirement after the second term established a precedent which held until 1940 and was enacted into law by the 22nd Amendment 1951.
