preload_afterload - Sheet1 Flashcards
What is Preload?
The stretch of the ventricles before contraction.
What is Afterload?
The resistance the heart has to overcome to pump blood.
What increases Preload?
- Longer diastole (filling time)
- Increased venous return
- Heart muscle damage
- Kidney failure (fluid overload)
What increases Afterload?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Aortic stenosis
What happens when Preload increases over time?
The heart becomes overstretched, less effective, and can lead to heart failure.
What happens when Afterload increases over time?
The heart muscle thickens, becomes less flexible, and can lead to heart failure.
How does Preload affect blood flow?
More Preload (stretch) means more blood is pumped forward.
How does Afterload affect blood flow?
More Afterload means the heart has to work harder to pump blood.
What conditions are associated with increased Preload?
- Fluid overload
- Heart failure
- Kidney failure
What conditions are associated with increased Afterload?
- Hypertension
- Aortic stenosis
- Pulmonary embolism
