What causes placenta praevia?
Blastocyst implants too low in the uterus
Why is Caesarean section indicated in placenta praevia?
Natural birth would cause massive exsanguination (shock and death) as baby would rupture placenta
How can an ectopic pregnancy present clinically?
- pain on one side of lower abdomen
- vaginal bleeding
- diarrhoea, faintness, pain on passing faeces, shoulder pain
What is the most common site for ectopic pregnancy?
Fallopian tube
Why can ectopic pregnancies quickly become life-threatening?
Rupture of relevant area leading to internal bleeding and septicaemia

Post-partum bleeding

Thrombosis: baby reduces venous return - stasis of blood. Blood hypercoagulation can cause pulmonary embolism, etc.
Sepsis due to reduced immunity.
