Preformulation - Compaction Flashcards
What is compression?
Particles forced into small space, reducing porosity + vol
What is compressibility?
Amenability to compression
What is compaction?
Particles cohere to form a solid specimen of defined geometry
What is compactability?
Susceptibility to compaction
Are compaction + compression the same?
NO
What does compaction require?
Compression
Will compression always result in compaction?
NO
How can particle cohesion be modified?
By formulation
What are the stages of the compaction cycle?
Filling
Compression
Ejection
Describe filling in compaction cycle
Lower punch inserted partially into die then powder filled into die cavity
Lower punch prevents powder falling out
Pusher removes any excess
Describe compression in compaction cycle
Upper punch inserts into die cavity
Upper punch moves down + lower punch moves up to compress tablet
Both punches move up
What is the Heckel equation?
ln (1/e) = kP + a
e = porosity P = compression pressure K = constant relating to particle deformation A = constant relating to particle rearrangement + fragmentation
What is tensile strength a result of?
Inter-particle bonding within the tablet
How is tensile strength determined?
Using diametric compression test
What happens if the tensile strength is too high?
Tablet may not dissolve
