Practicals🔬 Flashcards
When drawing a distillation diagram what should you bear in mind
Bulb of the thermometer should be at the T point connecting to the condenser
Where is water going in and where is it going out in a condenser
Water goes in at a lower point (against gravity)
Why does water flow against gravity in a condenser
Allows more efficient cooling and prevents back flow of water
When drawing reflux diagram what should the condenser be like and what’s the reason for this
Never seal the end of the condenser (which is vertical)
Because the build up of gas pressure could cause the apparatus to explode
Why is heating under reflux good to use
It prevents organic vapours from escaping by condensing them back to liquid
What’s the use of anti bumping granules
Prevent vigorous, uneven boiling by making small bubbles
