PPE Flashcards
What is a vector?
Something that has magnitude and direction
Example: force, acceleration and momentum
What is a scalar?
Something that has magnitude but no direction.
For example: Speed, distance, mass and temperature
What is a force?
A push or pull on an object. Forces can be contact or non contact forces
What is a contact force?
A contact force is a force that acts on an object only when the objects touch eachother.
What are examples of contact forces?
Friction, air resistance, tension
What are examples of non contact forces?
Magnetic force, gravitational force and electrostatic force
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
When two objects interact they always exert equal and opposite forces on eachother
What are forces measured in?
Newton’s
What is a resultant force?
A single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting on an object
What is the equation for momentum?
Force x distance
What is velocity?
Speed in a given direction
What is the equation for acceleration?
Change in velocity / time taken for change
What is the equation for resultant force?
Mass x acceleration
What is the equation for energy and potential difference?
Energy= current x voltage
Potential difference= current x resistance
How do you calculate power?
Energy/ time
Or
Current^2 x resistance
