Porifera (Sponges) Flashcards
porifera
sponges!! suspension feeding, phagocytosis
Asconoid
~1 mm diameter, simplest sponge type
syconoid
~cm diameter,
Leuconoid
largest and most complicated sponge type
archeocyte
totipotent: can give rise to all to fate cell types that make up the body
choanocyte
line the interior sponges and beat their flagella regularly creating water flow across the microvilli
3 layers tissue in porifera
choanoderm - contains choanocytes, inner most layer
mesohyl - connective tissue
pinacoderm - contains pinacocytes, external surface of the sponge, flattened cells,
reproduction in porifera
asexual reproduction - archeocyte
sexual reporduction - through germ cells embedded in mesohyl (makes eggs-choanocytes or sperm-archeocytes), sperm is released though excurrent canals and enter another sponge though choanocytes, viviparity (live birth)
