Populations In Ecosystems Definitions Flashcards
Niche
Where an organism lives and what it does there
It is a description of how an organism fits into its environment- can include feeding/breeding role
Population
All the organisms of one particular species living in a particular habitat
Community
The total number of living organisms in a particular ecosystem or habitat
Habitat
The part of an ecosystem in which a particular organism lives and which is characterised by physical conditions and the types of other organisms present
Ecosystem
A group of interrelated organisms and their physical environment
Biotic factors
The effects of the activities of living organisms on other organisms
Abiotic factors
The non-living, physical conditions in an ecosystem
Examples of abiotic factors
Temperature
Light intensity
Wind speed
Soil moisture content
Ph of soil
Ions
Oxygen concentration of water
Humidity
Ph of water
Precipitation concentration of CO2 in water
Examples of biotic factors
Predator prey / food availability
Breeding
Disease
Parasitism/ mutualism
Decomposition
Competition
Define competition
Organisms requiring the same resources.
One organism/ population can out-compete another
Define Intraspecific competition
Competition within individuals of the same species
Define Interspecific competition
Competition between members of different species
Examples of intraspecific competition
Mates
Food
Light (plants)
Territory
Water
Nitrate ions
Space for plant growth
Examples of interspecific competition
The same examples as intraspecifc however minus mates
