Populations- Hardy Weinberg Flashcards
Species
A group of similar organisms that are able to breed together to produce fertile offspring
Population
A group of organisms of the same species occupying a particular space at a particular time that can interbreed
Community
All organisms of different species occupying an area at a given time
Gene Pool
All alleles of all genes in a population
Allele
Alternative forms or versions of a gene
Genotype
The genetic composition of an organism (it’s alleles)
Phenotype
The physical characteristics of an organism, due to the environment and genotype
Allele frequency
How often an allele occurs in a population/gene pool
Hardy Weinberg Principle
A mathematical model that applies to diploid organisms that are sexually reproducing
Hardy Weinberg Conditions (3)
-The population is large
-The population has random mating
-The population is experiencing no natural selection
