Direct democracy:
A political system where the people judge and make their own decisions without a representative.
Representative democracy:
A political system where elected representatives are responsible for making decisions on behalf of the people.
Legitimacy:
A situation is legitimate when it is made democratically or by democratically represented personnel.
Pluralism:
Power is widely dispersed among all individuals and sections of society, with tolerance of all races, cultures, religions and lifestyles.
Pluralist democracy:
A description of a political system and/or society where there is widespread tolerance of different groups and lifestyles. Freedom of expressionism is respected largely and there is no concentration of power.
Democratic deficit:
A term to describe flawed democracy that can be corrected through reforms in the UK.
Franchise/Suffrage:
The right to vote no matter what group adults belong to so nobody is excluded, or a system is no longer deemed democratic.
Participation crisis:
A description in which critics have claimed political participation in the UK is declining, causing possibility of a democratic crisis.
Lobbyists:
Professionals hired by companies, pressure groups, foreign governments etc to persuade people to make decisions in favour of a certain group or cause.
