Open form or free verse
Poetry which does not adhere to these patterns
Closed or fixed form
Poetry characterized by regular patterns of rhyme, metre, and structure
Stanza (coll. verse)
A group of lines separated from others by a space
Syllable
A unit of sound in language, organized around a vowel sound
Stress
Occurs wen a syllable is emphasized more than another
Accentual verse
Poetic form that uses a set of numbers of stresses per line, wit a varying number of syllables
Foot
A cluster of (stressed and/or unstressed) syllables making up a unit
Metre
A regular pattern of feet
Iambic pentameter
Iambic: a foot of two syllables, with the stress on the second
Pentameter: a line composed of five feet, and therefore ten syllables
Blank verse
Unrhymed pentameter
Rhyme scheme
- pattern formed by the end of rhymes in each line
- can be signified using letters (ie. Abab, cdcd, efef, gg)
Couplet
- a two-line stanza often with a similar length and metre, usually rhyming
- heroic couplets: couplets in jam is pentameter
Tercet
A three line stanza with a regular rhyme scheme - aba aba aba
- terms rima: terceta with a set interlocking rhyme scheme - aba bcb cdc
Quatrain
A four line stanza with a regular rhyme scheme - abab bcbc
Sonnet
A fourteen line poem written in iambic pentameter with a regular rhyme scheme
