  • bilateral interstitial pulmonary infiltrates on CXR
  • sputum culture (often negative)
  • bronchoalveolar lavage (silver stained cysts)

  • IV pentamidine in severe cases
  • steroids if hypoxic, reduces respiratory failure risk
