Plate Boundries Flashcards
Destructive Margin
Occurs when an oceanic and a continental plate converge (meet).
Constructive margin
Occurs when an oceanic plate and continental plate move apart.
Conservative Margin
Occurs when two plates move in the same direction.
Collision
Occurs when two continental plates converge (meet)
Name the two that cause earthquakes
Collision and Conservative Margin
Explain Conservative Margin
As the plates move in the same direction they join and jam against one another. The Pacific plate moves quicker than the North American plate meaning that when the pressure is released there are earthquakes.
Name the two that cause volcanic eruptions
Destructive Margin and constructive Margin
Explain constructive Margin
The convention current pushes apart the two plates causing the earth to open up to then pressure to build and finally explode.
Explain collision
Neither plates sink as they meet meaning the pressure of the plates causes the formation of fold mountains. The plates converge into each other from the conventional current pushing the plates together and then when the pressure is released there are frequent and violent earthquakes.
Explain Destructive Margin
The convection currents push the two plates together causing one of the plates to subduct down underneath the other plate. The pressure builds underneath and the magma chamber piles up causing the volcano to explode.
