plate boundaries Flashcards
crust
thin solid outer layer
made up of oceanic and continental crust
all human activity take place
mantle
very thick layer
mostly dense or solid
upper part layer which is semi liquid called molten rock
movement of molten causes plate tectonics
core
divided into liquid outer core and solid inner core
temperature and pressure extremely hot and strong which causes rock of inner core to be solid
what is a transform/neutral/conservative plate boundary
two plates sliding against each other either in opposite directions or in the same direction but at the different speeds
sudden and rough jolting movement
give an example of a transform or neutral plate boundary
haiti earthquake 2010 and 2021 occurring at transform plate boundary between caribbean and north american plate boundary
what is a divergent/constructive plate boundary
2 plates moving away from each other and molten rock/magma rises inbetween two crustal plates leading to formation of new crust
if 2 oceanic plates move apart it is the sea floor spreading
give an example of divergent/constructive plate boundary
mid atlantic ridge where north america diverges away from eurasion plate to form underwater mountain ridge in atlantic ocean
what is formed at a divergent/constructive plate boundary
underwater volcanoes
volcanic islands like in iceland
what is a destructive/convergent plate boundary
2 plates move towards each other
oceanic colliding with continental
denser or heavier plate subducted beneath less dense plate to form subduction plate
how are earthquakes formed in a destructive/convergent plate boundary
movement is not smooth and sometimes plate sticks where energy and pressure builds up within rocks
when this is released seismic waves transfer energy through rocks
how are volcanoes formed in a destructive plate boundary
as oceanic/crustien plate subducted underrgoes intense heat and pressure as pulled down into mantle
causes rock to melt and turn into magma which may escape to surface of land through cracks
how are fold mountains formed in destructive/convergent plate boundary
when two continental plates converge, no subduction zone
have similar density so instead rocks crumple together at collision zone
give an example of fold mountains
himalayan mountains in north india from the indo-australian plate and eurasion plate
