Plasmodium vivax Flashcards
1
Q
Plasmodium vivax
A
Classification
Phylum: Protozoa
Class: Sporozoa
Genus: Plasmodium
Species: vivax
Common Name: Malarial Parasite
2
Q
Habit and Habitat
A
- It is wide spread in tropical and temperate countries
- It is intracellular parasite of human living in liver cells and RBC cells
- While extracellular parasite of mosquito living in alimentary canal
(gut) and salivary gland - It comprises several species (60) among them four are medically
important to us. They are; - Plasmodium vivax
- P. falciparum
- P. ovale
- P. malariae
3
Q
Structure of P. vivax
A
- It shows different shape of the body in different stages of its lifecycle
- It may be;
- Elongated or spindle shape – sporozoite
- Round or spherical shape – trophozoite
- Oval shape – merozoite
- Ring shape – signet ring stage
- Irregular shape – amoeboid stage
- A fully grown trophozoite is amoeboid in shape
- Body is covered with plasm membrane with no differentiation of
ectoplasm and endoplasm - Cytoplasm consists of single nucleus with mitochondria, golgi
complex, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome vacuole, haemozoin etc.

Q
Life Cycle
A
Digenetic parasite, i.e. lifecycle completes in two hosts
* Definitive Host (Primary Host):
Female anopheles mosquito
* Intermediate Host (Secondary Host)
Human
5
Q
Asexual Life Cycle in Human
A
Schizogony:
* Process of asexual reproduction by which Plasmodium undergoes
asexual multiplication
* It occurs in human liver cell (liver schizogony) and in RBC
(erythrocytic schizogony).
* When an infected female Anopheles mosquito bites a person, it
injects thousands of sporozoites along with saliva into the
bloodstream
