Plant Cells Flashcards
What makes a plant a plant?
photosynthesis
cell wall
alternation of generation
What is alternation of generations?
Parents (2n) produce spores (1n) through meiosis
Spores develop into gametophyte
gametophyte produces gametes
gametes fuse to produce zygotes
zygotes form into sporophytes
What is the cell wall made of?
microfibrils formed from crystallized cellulose
How are microfibrils formatted?
wound around the cell wall, adding to the inner side of the wall
What are hemicellulose?
binds microfibers
What is the middle lamella?
adhesive layer glue adjacent cell walls
What is pectin?
makes up the middle lamella
What is the primary cell wall?
thin walls found in all cells
What is the secondary cell wall?
thicker walls to reinforce primary walls in some cells
What strengthens cell walls?
lignin
How must cells grow?
by having the cell wall relax
What is the primary pit field?
clusters of plasmodesmata found in thin walls. Often found in areas of considerable transports, like glands
Plant vs animal reproduction
plants can reproduce asexually with large amounts of offsprings
animal’s pool for sexual reproduction is smaller
