Physiology Flashcards
What is the function of the ANS?
Controls the subconscious activities of the body
What are the subdivisions of the ANS?
Sympathetic system and parasympathetic system
What is the outflow for the sympathetic system?
Thoraco-lumbar, T1-12 and L1-2
What is the outflow for the parasympathetic system?
Cranio-sacral, innervation of cranial and sacral cavities 3, 7, 9 and 10
Where are the ganglia held in the sympathetic system?
Close to vertebrae in the sympathetic trunk
How are sympathetic postganglionic fibres created?
Preganglionic nerves enter the trunk and synapse within it
How long are sympathetic preganglionic fibres?
Short
How long are sympathetic postganglionic fibres?
Long
Where are parasympathetic ganglion held?
Close to the target
How long are parasympathetic preganglionic fibres?
Long
How long are parasympathetic postganglionic fibres?
Short
What acts on cholinergic receptors?
ACh
What are the 2 cholinergic receptors?
Muscarinic and nicotinic receptors
What acts on adrenergic receptors?
Nor-adrenaline
What are the 2 adrenergic receptors?
Alpha and beta receptors
What do preganglionic fibres release?
ACh
What receptors do preganglionic fibres act on?
Nicotinic
What do sympathetic postganglionic fibres release?
Nor-adrenaline
What receptors do sympathetic postganglionic fibres act on?
Alpha and beta
What is special about the adrenal gland?
Sympathetic postganglionic fibres release nor-adrenaline into the blood
What do parasympathetic postganglionic fibres release?
ACh
What receptors do parasympathetic postganglionic fibres act on?
Muscarinic
