Physics Unit 3 Flashcards
Newton’s First Law of Motion
describes inertia, all objects with mass resist changes in motion
Objects in motion…
stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force
Objects at rest…
stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force
Equilibrium
when forces are balanced
Static Equilibrium
an object that is not moving, all forces add up to zero
Dynamic Equilibrium
forces still balanced but moving at constant velocity
Inertia and mass relationship
more mass = more inertia
friction
a force that is only in place when an object is moving, a force in the opposite direction of motion
Newton’s second law
F=ma
Force = mass*acceleration
increasing the mass of an object = acceleration goes down, mass and acceleration proportional
The Newton
SA unit for force
N=(kg)*m/s^2
Gravity
all objects with mass have a non-contact attractive force on other objects with mass. This force is directly related to the masses and inversely proportional to their distance apart.
it matters how much mass and how far apart things are
Newton’s 3rd Law
every force has an equal/opposite reaction
contact force
a force as a result of two objects coming into contact with each other
forces at a distance
forces that apply even if two objects are not touching each other, ex. magnetic, gravitational, electric
