Physics & Energy Flashcards
What is Acceleration?
Rate at which velocity changes (increasing speed, decreasing speed or changing direction )
What is an example of acceleration?
Pitcher throws a ball
Bat hits a ball
Car passes another car
Biking down hill
What is deceleration?
Object’s slowing down;also called “negative acceleration “
What is an a example of deceleration?
Catching a soft ball
Car stops at a light
Boat stops pulling water skier
How do you calculate acceleration?
Average Acceleration= Average Acceleration = Final speed-Initial speed
(straight line) Time
How do you graph acceleration?
To analyze the motion of an accelerating object, you can use
speed vs time graph
1. slanted straight line= constant rate of acceleration
2. slope of the line = acceleration
What is the formula of speed?
Instantaneous Speed = distance = d time t
Average Speed = final distance – initial distance
What is motion?
If your distance from another object (place) is changing
What is a reference point?
Is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion.
How do you know if an object is in motion
An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.
What is friction?
the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
What is Newton´s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd law
- every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force.
- F = ma
- for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is weight vs mass?
Mass is the total amount of matter, or “stuff,” in an object. Weight is the force of gravity on an object.
What is gravity?
the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
