Phonological Features Flashcards
Define syllabic features
Phonemes that are the nucleus or entirety of a syllable
Define the +consonantal feature
Consonant or Vowel, + = consonant, - = vowels
Define Sonorant features
Continuous airflow with little constriction and/or turbulence. Mostly made up of Nasals, approximants, vowels, and glides.
Define the Approximant feature.
Vowels, glides, liquids. Basically Sonorant but without nasals. Involve creating some constriction but not enough for turbulence in the air.
Define the Continuant feature.
A speech sound produced without a complete closure in the oral cavity, meaning it can be articulated continually.
Define Stridents
High pitch and amplitude consonants made between the tongue and teeth. Subcategory of Stridents.
Define +Nasal
Well, it’s just whether or not the sound is articulated Nasally or Orally y’know.
Define the +-lateral feature.
Lateral vs central airflow, exclusively +lateral in lateral approximants.
Define the +-Anterior feature.
Refers to sounds articulated at or in front of the alveolar region. +Anterior refers to sounds made with the tongue in front of the ridge, -Anterior refers to sounds behind the ridge.
Define the +-Distributed feature.
Long duration of constriction and part of the tongue used. +Distributed refers to laminal consonants (tongue blade) and -Distributed refers to apical consonants (tongue tip)
Define the +-Strident feature.
High amplitude and high pitch frication is present. Sibilants, labiodental and uvular fricatives, and the affricates from those, are +strident, all other affricates and fricatives are -Strident.
