Phone Affairs Part Two Flashcards
Entry to the EEC
Third application was prepared in 1971. France has now led by Popidou , i’m unconvinced that the EEC needed Britain as much as Britain needed Europe. All the hard detailed arrangements and exceptions were already in place.
Why did Conservative MPs doubt entry to the EEC
They were doubters partly from those who believed strongly in the Commonwealth and from those who believe that Britain would be surrendering her sovereignty. Powell voted against the passage of the European bill through Parliament at every single stage. He believed that he had betrayed the contract by signing the treaty before It had been debated in Parliament.
What was the European referendum
When Liberton England in 1974 Wilsons man in was party unity. He demonstrated this in his referendum campaign of 1975. His new strategy allowed his anti-European cabinet colleagues to camping according to their own views rather than to enforce a party line. Wilson and Callaghan argued that they themselves were neutral.
By 1975 though to support for Britain staying in the EEC was much stronger than before. The economic mess the country was in seem to prove Britain needed to be in there for their own economic survival. The yes campaign was well finance by business supporters. The no campaign is failing to 2 main categories. There were those who argued that it would be bad for British workers they included Barbara Castle from the left of the Labour party.
The question asked in the referendum was do you think that the United Kingdom should stay in the European community. 17 million voted yes and 8 million voted no British membership was confirmed
What happened after the referendum
European issues quietened. Ryan Jenkins left Parliament to become a European Commissioner. The Labour Party was increasingly anti-European and does Conservatives who were opposed to the increasing influence of Europe have not change their opinions. But the people had voted to stay in so the debate was closed for the time being.
What was the state of the special relationship with the USA
Why did they worsen
He for jacketed attempts by the USA to use Britain as a link with Europe and insisted that the United States should negotiate with the European committee as a whole rather than using Britain as a go-between.
However Heath person wife got on with US President Richard Nixon.
Relationship worsened in October 1973 during the Yom Kippur war. The US wanted to use NATO basis in Europe for an airlift of supplies to Israel. Most European states including Britain refused permission. This was because they feared that supplies of oil from the middle east would be put at risk. This put Anglo American relationship is under great strain.
Attitudes to the USSR and China
Courtoise meant that relations between Britain and these countries have been based on suspicion boarding on hospitality. However in 1970 the United States improved their relationship so Britain follow their lead
Attitudes to China
Open till the early 1970s relationship between China and Britain were strained. This change suddenly in July 1971 when Nixon surprisingly announced thawing of relations by a visit to china. In March Britain followed suit and green and exchange of investors with China. He made many visits to China from 1974 onwards and was awarded the title of peoples friendship envoy . The highest possible honour given by the Chinese government to a foreigner.
