Q

Why did Conservative MPs doubt entry to the EEC

A

They were doubters partly from those who believed strongly in the Commonwealth and from those who believe that Britain would be surrendering her sovereignty. Powell voted against the passage of the European bill through Parliament at every single stage. He believed that he had betrayed the contract by signing the treaty before It had been debated in Parliament.

By 1975 though to support for Britain staying in the EEC was much stronger than before. The economic mess the country was in seem to prove Britain needed to be in there for their own economic survival. The yes campaign was well finance by business supporters. The no campaign is failing to 2 main categories. There were those who argued that it would be bad for British workers they included Barbara Castle from the left of the Labour party.
The question asked in the referendum was do you think that the United Kingdom should stay in the European community. 17 million voted yes and 8 million voted no British membership was confirmed
