Pharmacology Made Easy Flashcards
Antibacterials
Drugs that interfere with cell wall
Viruses
Invade cells of host. Antibiotics ineffective
Mycobacterium
Waxy cell wall. Tuberculosis
Tinea pedis
Athlete’s foot
Tinea corporis
Ringworm
Fungi
Plant-like organisms
Helminths
Worms in intestines
Penicillin
Treats broad-spectrum infections. Weakens and destroys cell wall
Cephalexin (Keflex)
Treats infections that gram positive cocci cause. Weakens & destroys cell wall.
Vancomycin
Treats infections in patients with penicillin allergy. Treats MRSA.
Tetracyclines
Treats acne vulgaris. Inhibits protein synthesis. Give with non dairy products.
Aminoglycosides
Gentamicin. Inhibits protein synthesis. Can cause hearing loss, vertigo.
Fluoroquinolones
Treats wide range of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin. Inhibits DNA replication & cell division.
Isoniazid
Treatment of active and latent TB. Interferes with lipid, RNA, & DNA synthesis.
Suprainfection
Candida albicans in mouth, throat, or vagina.
Analgesic
Pain killer
Agonists
Drugs that bind with receptor and precipitate greater than typical response.
Antagonists
Drugs that bond with receptor and block response or less than typical response.
Competitive
Competes with agonist for receptor sites
Noncompetitive
Blocks agonist’s access to receptor site
Nontherapeutic
Unintended effects of a drug that occur at a therapeutic dose.
